The Story Behind This One

A few years ago I partnered with Yucca Flats and sold their Saddle Blankets. I don't sell the blankets anymore, but this has always been one of my favorite mohair tack sets.

This was not a simple design to re-create.

A blanket is 34 inches wide. You have room to play. A breast collar is four inches wide and a cinch is close to six inches. To take that same Serape with all its color changes, its little detailed bands, its random jewel tones, and shrink it down to fit on tack — and still have it read as Yucca Flats — took real precision. Every color change has to be planned, every thread counted. You can't fudge it or it just looks busy.

This set is 13 hand-dyed colors, some dyed in an ombre technique as seen in the blanket, all changing constantly from one end to the other. Lilac, coral peach, turquoise, teal, rust, plum, cream, deep burgundy, cobalt — with all my little signature accent rows in between. Nothing repeats perfectly, that's the beauty of a true Serape.

This is not a beginner pattern. This is years of weaving, packed into a breast collar.
