Spring flowers. Fall colors. One happy experiment.

This rag started as an experiment — Matilija poppy leaves, eucalyptus, sage flowers, and the delicate pink and white blooms of California buckwheat (Eriogonum fasciculatum) all laid out on silk. Then, instead of a traditional dye blanket, onion skins were laid over the top, everything rolled tight and steamed. The skins served as a dye blanket.

The result? The spring botanicals printed through the onion skin, and the warmth of the onion transformed those fresh spring colors into rich, golden fall tones. Nature surprised us. It usually does.

Long and narrow, this piece works beautifully as a head wrap, a neck tie, or a pop of color at the collar.
